2018 Armed Forces Insurance Military Spouse of the Year

About the Event

Military Spouse magazine founded the Military Spouse of the Year® (MSOY) award in 2008 to honor military spouses from all branches of service. More than a million military spouses support and maintain the home front while their service members defend this great nation. The Military Spouse of the Year® award recognizes military spouses’ important contributions and unwavering commitment to the military community and our country.
The program receives nominations from the military community and all Americans. There are three phases of voting, culminating in the announcement of the Military Spouse of the Year® in Washington, D.C. in early May. The event attracts Congressional members, senior military, Department of Defense leadership, and military spouses from all over the world. We encourage all Americans to consider nominating their friends, neighbors, or colleagues for this prestigious award.

History

2008

Military Spouse pioneered the
concept of empowering the
community by enabling military
spouses to recognize leaders
within their ranks. It was also
the inaugural Military Spouse
of the Year® awards luncheon.

2009

Military Spouse added a
Spouse of the Year (SOY)
for each branch of service.

2013

Military Spouse added an
installation level to the award,
ensuring that each and every
base, district (Coast Guard),
and state (National Guard)
has a representative.

2014

Military Spouse selected its
first overseas MSOY, who was
stationed in Okinawa, Japan
(2014 AFI MSOY Lakesha Cole).

2015

Taya Kyle spoke at the MSOY
luncheon, where she was
awarded the Gabby Giffords
Award for Bravery and Courage.

2017

Military Spouse of the Year celebrated it’s 10th Anniversary with a dedication to “10 Years of Advocacy.” Brittany Boccher represented this occasion as the 2017 Armed Forces Insurance Military Spouse of the Year.

Rules

To be considered for the 2018 Armed Forces Insurance Military Spouse of the Year®, a nominee must meet the following criteria:

  • The nominee must be a spouse of an active duty or reserve service member of the US Armed Forces: Army, Marine Corps, Navy, Air Force, Coast Guard, and National Guard.
  • The nominee cannot currently be serving on active duty, as a reservist, or as a National Guardsman.
  • The nominee must be at least 18 years of age by the MSOY nominations deadline.

Voting Process

Round 1: Installation Voting

Nominations are collected and organized per base, CG district, and state. The nominee with the highest popular vote at each base, district or state will be named the respective winner and advance for consideration in the Top 18 spouses. There will be a separate category to accommodate spouses who are not currently attached to a base (e.g. spouses on recruiting duty). In the event a base/district/state does not receive any votes for its candidates, that installation will not have a candidate for that year.

CRITERIA WEIGHTING Popular Vote: 100%

Round 2: Top 18

Nominees who have won their respective base, CG district, or state will continue to move on as candidates. The Top 18 Spouses of the Year will be decided based on the results of the popular vote from Round 1 and the MSOY Panel. These 18 candidates, three from each branch, will be eligible for the branch round of voting.

CRITERIA WEIGHTING

Results of Popular Vote from Round 1: 25%

MSOY Panel: 75%

Round 3: Branch Voting

Nominees who advance to the Top 18 level will be eligible for the branch round of voting. After the Branch Level Vote, the highest combined score derived from the popular vote, the MSOY Panel and the Judge Advisory Panel will result in the six National level candidates.

CRITERIA WEIGHTING

Popular Vote: 25%

Judge Advisory Panel: 25%

MSOY Panel: 50%

Round 4: Overall MSOY

Branch winners will then advance to the final round of voting. The 2018 Armed Forces Insurance Military Spouse of the Year® will be selected based on the highest combined score derived from the popular vote, the Judge Advisory Panel, and the MSOY Panel. The National Winner will not be announced until May.

CRITERIA WEIGHTING

Popular Vote: 25%
