About the nominee: I have been in this crazy wonderful military world with the love of my life, William Scott Slade since 1990. We have 3 amazing sassy kiddos. Joey, 21 studying Environmental Engineering in Santa Barbara, Krista is 17 and a senior in High School. Our son Nicholas is 11 and in the 5th grade. I am a school teacher and work with the special needs students in the Oceanside Unified School District. I am super proud to be an Ohio Girl!! “O-H” I grew up in the small loving town of Girard. My father and grandfathers proudly served in the Army before I was born however, I knew very little about the Military World. I grew up in the same house, with the same trustworthy neighbors, with the same amazing friends since kindergarten. I had no idea what was in store for me!!! I have made 13 different houses a home, we have seen neighbors come and go every three years, and our children have gone to 10 different schools.
Hobbies: I love to cook. I love spending time with my family and friends. I enjoy going to football games where our daughter is a cheerleader. I love cheering on our sons from the sidelines at every basketball, baseball, soccer and football game.
Interesting Facts: I will hug you, no matter what!
What is something you’ve learned from being a military spouse? Resiliency. I’ve taught myself to do so many things… I’ve never dreamed of. While my husband was deployed, I have been through hurricanes, earthquakes, fires and tornados. I can pack up a house in a day and make a new house a home the next. I can change the oil in my car, I can install appliances and take a sink apart in no time flat!!
In your opinion, what is one of the most important issues facing military families? Dealing with operational tempo. We have so many tabs open at all times, it’s important and difficult to find the balance between deployments, kids, ER trips, homework, working, volunteer meetings, school, and extra curricular activities… just to name a few.
What is one of the best aspects of being in a military family? Raising kind hearted, respectful, compassionate, patriotic, and independent children. I have always been very close with my family and friends from home. I truly believe in this crazy military life we live… we seek out that family closeness we miss so much. Our friends become the family we choose for ourselves. My family and I have been very blessed to be a part of some pretty amazing families along the way. Together, our family and our military village helps raise those kind hearted, respectful, compassionate, patriotic, and independent children.
What is one thing you want to accomplish with the Military Spouse of the Year title? Making a difference with the military spouses to get them more involved and feeling appreciated. I would like to see enlisted and officer spouses working together more. I have always been super proud of my husband’s accomplishments, but they are just that… his accomplishments. They are not mine to wear, pull rank or carry. We are all military spouses supporting our service member and family the best we know how. One team, one fight. despite rank, housing, jobs or number of deployments. I would like to see Enlisted and Officer spouses working side by side. Together, we can do some pretty amazing things. I would also like to see a better way for spouses with careers to transfer their credentials, license, certificates from state to state. We should be able to transition just as easy as our spouses with exemptions
Reasons for nominating:
Kristie is such a wonderful person and a dedicated military spouse. She makes everyone feel at ease and like they are her best friend. She is so funny, kind, sweet, and a joy to be around. Even though she is busy with her own job and family, she volunteers countless hours for the family program. She is awesome! -- Karyn Vaughn, Friend
Its with great pleasure that I nominate Kristie as Spouse of the year. She spends many moments mentoring, guiding and helping spouses with their questions, concerns and even personal problems. Kristie has volunteered countless hours and never complained or thought twice when asked for her help. She is a mother of 3 children, works at a full time job, volunteers with the spouses network and still finds the energy and love to give back to all. Kristie is a perfect example of an amazing spouse, hard worker and fantastic friend. -- Suzan Simon , Friend
She is by far the most dedicated sweetest spouse I have ever met. She knows how to bring people together, and also know tons of resources. Kristie made me feel so comfortable when I started volunteering with her. She has that smile and laugh that will light up any room. I can always count her for anything and everything. If you need a helping hand or even a shoulder to cry on, just give her a call and she will be there. I look up to her so much, and I hope one day I could be just as a great of a military spouse like she is! -- Juliet Ong, Military-Spouse
Kristie exemplifies what it means to be a military spouse. She is a mentor, a friend, an advocate and an amazing volunteer. We call Kristie our "hugger" b/c there is no one that she can't make feel welcome, included and a part of our military family. She has made a lasting impact on so many military families through her volunteerism and dedication to the Marine Corps. Her countless hours as a volunteer has made a significant impact through the SMP, Holiday Events, helping spouses find housing, and the other quiet volunteering she does not think the rest of us know about. She has been my mentor and she embodies everything I hope to be as a military spouse. She never expects recognition, a thank you or any acknowledgement for her contribution. She genuinely cares about the families around her no matter their rank, education, status, etc. She is MY hero through and through. Thank you. -- Crystal Cornwall, Military-Spouse
